La Roue Castle

Of this castle, only part of the curtain wall remains, as well as the square tower visible from the village. This keep, known as the "Pierrefort Tower" in homage to the last lord of the estate, "Hérail de Pierrefort La Roue", dates from the 14th century and was restored in the 19th. The original edifice probably dates back to the 13th century. It was then a powerful feudal castle that held a strategic position within the belt of fortifications surrounding the Forez County. It very soon became the property of the La Roue family, known since the 12th century, which dominated the Ance Valley from its three castles: La Roue, Montpeloux, and La Chaulme.
