Hiking - BÉNIVAY-OLLon - The Heights of Saint-Jean

Discover the secret valley of the Ayguemarse, with its wild landscapes and the panoramic view from the Saint-Jean chapel.

“Reaching the Saint-Jean chapel, and then the ridge of the Montagne de Peitieux, takes some effort... but what a rewarding feeling once you're up there! Throughout the hike, you can enjoy the superb landscapes typical of the Baronnies Provençales, from the orchards of Bénivay to the surrounding peaks, sometimes dominated by Mont Ventoux, and a return journey through a more wooded setting.” Manon Saphore, intern at the Baronnies Provençales Regional Natural Park.

  • At waypoints 0 and 1: be careful when fording the Ayguemarse river. The ground can be slippery, especially after rain.

  • Between waypoints 2 and 4: pay close attention to the red and white markers of the GR®9 trail. Be sure to stay on the path.

  • AREA TRANQUILITY: Respect the peace and quiet of the area. Avoid shouting or using sound devices (radios, speakers, etc.) out of respect for other users and for the wildlife, which is particularly vulnerable during breeding or wintering seasons.

  • WILD PLANTS: Refrain from picking flowers and plants found along the trail. Some are protected species, and all contribute to the richness of local biodiversity.

  • SUMMER SEASON: Part of this route is exposed to the sun. In summer, be sure to bring plenty of water, a hat, and sunscreen. An early start is recommended to avoid the midday heat.

  • FIRE RISK: Fire is the enemy of the forest… and the hiker! Do not smoke or light any fires in the forest; it is forbidden year-round! During the summer, before setting out, check the latest conditions and regulations for accessing forest areas.
