Hiking - Faubouloin Loop
Discover the 16th-century Faubouloin Chapel and its three Christianized Celtic fountains deep within the forest.
Legends of Faubouloin
The Faubouloin Forest, as attested by Jean Drouillet, is the nerve center of cults and beliefs in Morvan. Indeed, three fountains, highly regarded for their beneficial, healing, or divinatory virtues, flow peacefully there: the Ash Tree Fountain (Fontaine du Frêne), source of numerous legends, that of Saint Marguerite, and that of Saint Mary (Sainte-Marie), both oracle fountains. Notre-Dame du Frêne Chapel, a pilgrimage site, is said to have been built as early as the 15th century. This still-active pilgrimage has integrated pagan rituals related to healing, thus proving their persistence, despite Christianity which, unable to make them forgotten, was forced to compromise with them.
