Walking - Argentalet Loop
This walk, featuring interpretive panels, winds through the Saulieu State Forest, where majestic deciduous trees stand alongside young conifer plantations. You will follow a section of the old Roman road that connected the two historical sites of Bibracte and Alésia. Around the peaceful Argentalet pond, tables are available for a pleasant picnic.
François Pompon was born in Saulieu in 1855. Passionate about sculpture, he went to Paris. Stylization, light, and movement became paramount in his work. Recruited by Rodin, Pompon then rose to the level of the master's elite practitioners. Yet, at fifty, he still remained in obscurity. His fascination for animals would shape his output. The originality of his animal sculptures quickly became evident. Supported by friends, he continued his work and, in 1922, achieved legitimate recognition with his White Bear. He died in 1933. Part of François Pompon's production is exhibited at the Saulieu museum. Two copies of the Bull and the White Bear adorn the town.
