Hiking - CABRIÈRES D’AVIGNON - From the Cedar Grove to the Plague Wall
A fascinating immersion in a tragic past, not to be missed!
"Not far from Cabrières-d'Avignon lie the remains of the devilishly historic Plague Wall! So how about we go for a hike to recall the arrival of the plague in 1720 at the port of Marseille, in the holds of the cursed ship Grand Saint-Antoine, before it spread throughout Provence, Languedoc, and the Comtat Venaissin. Its spread was so rapid it seemed unstoppable! To protect themselves, the people of Comtat had no other choice; if they wanted to survive, they had to find a solution, and fast!" - Fabrice Teurquety, tourism advisor at OTI Destination Luberon.
- Between points 4 and after point 5: mind your ankles on very stony or rocky sections.
- Do not climb on dry stone walls and structures; by doing so, you preserve these witnesses of our past.
- Around point 4: WARNING PASTORAL ZONE from early May to late July: if you encounter guard dogs, do not pet or threaten them. Stop, then wait patiently for their 'inspection' to end before calmly resuming your path, skirting the flock as much as possible. Preferably, do not bring your own dog, or if you do, keep it on a leash. For reference, consult the correct reflexes to adopt when encountering guard dogs.
- FIRE RISK. Fire is the enemy of the forest… and the hiker! Do not smoke in the forest or light any fires, especially since it's forbidden regardless of the season! And during summer, before setting out, check the conditions and regulations for access to forest areas.
