The Morvan Forest

Its history can be summarized in four acts.
The first spans from 1550 to 1850 with wood floating: deciduous trees (beech, oak) were exploited as "taillis fureté" (harvesting a large quantity of small wood from coppice regrowth) to supply Paris with firewood.
After wood floating, priority was given to agriculture, to the detriment of the forest. Coppice under standards developed mainly for domestic and artisanal uses.
Rural exodus in the 1950s and financial incentives favored the planting of conifers, spruces, Douglas firs.
If today the forest is an economic activity focused on exporting Douglas fir, its other ecological and social functions should not be neglected.
