Hiking - EYGALAYES - The Freedom Trail

Follow in the footsteps of Laurent Pascal, a Maquisard who survived a shooting in 1944, while enjoying the stunning scenery of the Baronnies.

“This is a fairly easy hike where you can discover and admire the mountains of the southeastern Baronnies Provençales (Chabre, Chanteduc, Crête de l’Âne, etc.). On a clear day, you can even see some mountains of the Massif des Monges. The trail passes through two small villages with a rather troubling history: one was the site of a real massacre, and the other saved the life of a survivor of the shooting.” Léo Michelet, intern at the Baronnies Provençales Regional Nature Park.

  • Between points 1 and 2, 3 and 4, and at point 5: use caution when crossing the main roads.

  • TRANQUILITY OF THE AREA: I will respect the peace and quiet of the places I walk through. I will avoid shouting or using audio devices (radios, speakers, etc.), out of respect for other users and for the wildlife, which is particularly vulnerable during breeding and wintering seasons.

  • WILD PLANTS: I will refrain from picking the flowers and plants I find along the way. Some are protected species, and all of them contribute to the rich local biodiversity.

  • SUMMER SEASON: Part of the route is exposed to the sun. In summer, I will bring enough water, a hat, and sunscreen, and I will plan for an early start to avoid the intense heat.

  • FIRE RISK: Fire is the enemy of the forest… and the hiker! I will not smoke or light any fires in the forest, as it is forbidden regardless of the season! And in the summer, before setting out on a walk, I will check the access conditions and regulations for forest areas.
