Hiking - The Sappey Loop: the old-world charm of the Montgelaffrey hamlets

Sappey des Trocas, Sappey des Cartiers, Sappey des Cohendet... Explore the many summer hamlets that give Montgelaffrey its charm.

Of all the local tree species, it was most likely the fir tree (from the Celtic sappo) that inspired the names of the many ‘Sappeys’ around Montgellafrey! As you wander through these picturesque hamlets, you will discover ancient wooden granaries, washhouses, chapels and bread ovens that are still in use. The ‘maisons à jambes’ (stilt-style houses) are also a typical architectural feature of the Maurienne valley. They are a testament to an ingenious building technique, designed to compensate for the unstable ground. In addition to these heritage sights, you will find magnificent panoramic views and secret natural spots, such as the Grand Lac de la Léchère and the Rocher de la Mort.
