Hiking - La Chapelle d'Aurelle

Starting from St Geniez d'Olt et d'Aubrac, in the Lot Valley, you will slowly climb the slopes of the Aubrac to discover the hamlet and chapel of Aurelle. It can only be reached on foot!
An exceptional site with its 14th-century Romanesque chapel and outstanding biodiversity: a jewel in the middle of a forest.
By municipal decree, the Chapelle d’Aurelle will be closed to the public from May 1st to September 1st, 2026 to protect a colony of bats (Greater Horseshoe Bat) during their breeding season, in accordance with Article L411-1 of the Environmental Code, which prohibits the destruction or disturbance of protected species.

This site is of major ecological interest on a regional scale for this strictly protected species.

The colony's progress is monitored via real-time video surveillance.

A virtual tour of the chapel's interior is available to explore this remarkable historic monument.

Additionally, you can peer inside through the small hatch built into the door.

In 2021, the St Geniez d'Olt et d'Aubrac town council modified this hike's route to avoid as much asphalt as possible.
The trail is well-marked, and signposts will regularly show you the direction to take and the remaining distance in km.
