Hiking - Jurieux Chapel - Ste-Croix-en-Jarez no. 2

This short walk takes you to discover the Jurieux Chapel.
At the top of the hill stands the ancient Jurieux Chapel, first mentioned in 1225 in ecclesiastical records and in 1317 in the titles of the House of Bourbon.

A wooden porch protects the entrance. Before its recent restoration, the nave's vault was covered with wood panelling in a basket-handle arch. The chapel on the right, dated 1555, with its ribbed vaults, supports the massive bell tower. Note the wooden statues of St. Stephen and St. Lawrence; the more recent statues of St. Roseline (a Carthusian nun) and St. Bridget (the chapel's patron saint).

On this sun-drenched slope, crackling with heat, a sandstone cross dated 1520 sleeps in the chapel's shadow, offering hospitality to a few lizards.

From the car park above the old charterhouse, go down the small road on the left. At the cross, follow the road on the right for 100 m. Climb the path on the right through the woods. Cross the road. Go up the path to La Croix-du-Sud
Take the path on the right, cross the road and continue along the wide ridge path.
At the junction on the edge of the woods, go down the main path straight ahead to the Carêm’entrant cross, then take the path straight ahead to the left of the cross. Continue and leave the Chemin du Parc on your right to go down
and cross the Couzon. Go up the opposite slope and cross the D30. ⚠️ Caution, this is a busy road, so please be careful.
Continue on the path straight ahead to reach the Jurieux Chapel.
Continue along the Route de Jurieux, then take the road on the right that leads to Le
Cognet. After one hundred metres, take a path on the right lined with large
chestnut trees. First through meadows and then a small oak wood,
it leads to the tarmacked path that descends on the right to Ste
Croix with lovely views over the old charterhouse.
