Autun, a city of art and history
"Capital" of the Eduan people, after Bibracte, Augustodunum (Autun) became a renowned center of Roman culture, as evidenced by the remains of the immense 6 km rampart with four monumental gates, the ancient theatre, or the Temple of Janus (Roman god of transitions and choice). Christianity was established there as early as the 3rd century.
As the seat of a bishopric, Autun was adorned throughout the Middle Ages and the modern period with churches, collegiate churches, cathedrals, and attracted convents and monasteries while developing a trading hub near the navigable Arroux river. The industrial era opened in Autun with the exploitation of oil shale, of which the two imposing spoil heaps remain.
