Hiking - Le Fossat

At the foot of the Goulet mountain and Mont Lozère, discover Altier and its hamlets, with its medieval castle, church, and beautiful surroundings. It’s well worth the detour!

As you gain elevation, a wide-open view of the northern slope of Mont Lozère unfolds before you. The descent follows the valat de La Rouvière, one of the tributaries of the Altier. Take the time to visit the fortified castle perched on its schist spur.

Along the route, directional posts and yellow painted waymarks will guide you. The place names and/or directions to follow are indicated in bold italics and in quotation marks in the description below:

Starting from "Altier", climb to "Roche Crouzet", then turn right toward "Le Grand Altier", and continue to "Le Fossat" via "Racouse".

From "Fossat", return to "Altier" via "Roche Crouzet".

This walk is taken from the cartoguide Mont Lozère – Land of Springs, from the Margeride to Villefort Lake in the Cévennes, produced by the Mont Lozère Outdoor Activity Center.

Adapt your equipment to the day’s weather conditions. Remember that mountain weather can change quickly. Make sure to bring enough water, good shoes, and a hat. Always close fences and gates properly.
