Hiking - Le Grand Galibier: A legendary ascent in the Cerces massif

An exceptional hike that takes you over the symbolic 3,000-metre mark! Prepare for breathtaking views: the summit of Grand Galibier offers a spectacular panorama of the Ecrins, Vanoise, Mont-Blanc and Thabor ranges.

Overlooking the famous pass of the same name, the Grand Galibier (3228 m) is a link between the northern and southern Alps. Along the way, hikers will discover Lac des Cerces, a wild paradise where the grey cliffs of Pointe des Cerces are reflected in its waters. The hike takes you through varied landscapes, from colourful mountain pastures to glacial landscapes. As you approach the summit, it is not uncommon to spot ibex. After a final ascent that is somewhat exposed and technical, the Grand Galibier awaits the seasoned hiker. Arguably one of the most sensational panoramas in the Alps, facing the Barre des Ecrins and La Meije!

From Plan Lachat, follow the track to Les Mottets. From there, take the well-marked path to the south-east which leads to Lac des Cerces (alt. 2410m). Continue due south on the GR57 trail, which leads to the Col de la Ponsonnière (2613m). Follow the Ponsonnière ridge due west, passing above Lac Blanc and below Roc Termier. Reach the pass and Lac Termier. From the pass, head up the combe to the north-west towards the summit. Make your way through the boulders below the east summit to reach the gap where the steep Couloir de la Clapière ends. Reach the west summit, the highest point, which offers a sensational panorama over the Écrins, La Vanoise, Mont-Blanc and many other massifs.

Hikers will need to use their hands on the approach to the summit.
