Hiking - Lac des Grenouilles, between forest and alpine pasture
This bright hike is a marvel in any season. The Grenouilles larch forest abounds with flowers and colour: the grass turns yellow in summer, while the trees stay green until autumn, when they turn to ochre.
While scouting the trail, a Mercantour National Park ranger spotted several mammals, including ibex, chamois and marmots. It is quite easy to spot marmots around the lake; listen closely and their calls may help you locate them.
From the Valmasque car park and signpost 395, take the track towards Lac des Grenouilles and Fontanalba.
The entire ascent takes place in the heart of a larch forest, which is characterised by bright light on the forest floor and widely spaced trees. This habitat supports many species and is very typical of the high-altitude forests of the Mercantour.
At signpost 392, leave the track and turn right to enter the core zone of Mercantour National Park. Once you reach Lac des Grenouilles, enjoy the beautiful natural amphitheatre and the shade of the monumental larches.
Return via the same route.
