Hiking - Le maquis Bernard
In the heart of steep valleys and coppice forests, a hike through the maquis retracing the steps of the Morvan Resistance...
The Maquis Bernard
Under Nazi occupation, the Morvan region, with its forest cover and administrative complexity, sheltered some thirty maquis (resistance groups). Initially very modest, the one founded in March 1943 by Louis Aubin, known as "Bernard", gradually developed with the help of the local population. Recognized in April 1944 by the military command, it was attached to the Forces Françaises de l'Intérieur. English parachutist drops, reinforced by a section of English S.A.S. paratroopers, enabled them to go on the offensive.
This was followed by an intensification of clandestine actions and bloody reprisals in Planchez, Montsauche, and especially Dun-les-Places. On August 19, 20, and 21, 1944, the resistance fighters liberated the area of the Morvan where they were based.
