The Rogation Crosses
Rogations, a forgotten tradition that once shaped rural life. A three-day liturgical festival, held the week before Ascension, it was established in 469 by Saint-Mamert, then bishop of Vienne. Parishioners, led by the priest, walk through the commune to bless the meadows and fields, stopping at the foot of the crosses. Each day is dedicated to a specific blessing, with the aim of guaranteeing the community’s prosperity through prayer. That’s why the rogation crosses are found in strategic locations such as paths, fields, and house approaches. In the 18th century, missions multiplied, and to celebrate their closure, crosses known as “mission crosses” were erected, leading to a large gathering. Rogations gradually faded out in the 1960s. A few communes still perpetuate this tradition on a single day during traditional festivals.
