Hiking - Les Hourcières

Starting from Verlac, a typical mountain village, discover the hamlet and chapel of Aurelle. It's only accessible on foot!
One of 4 shaded loops through Aubrac and its boraldes, offering viewpoints and ancient heritage.
Aurelle Chapel, built in the 14th century, then renovated by a team of volunteers and listed as a historical monument in the 1980s, is home to a colony of "Greater Horseshoe Bats", a protected species of bat.

Today, it is the largest breeding colony for this species in Occitania.

Under a municipal order, Aurelle Chapel will be closed to the public from May 1 to September 30, 2026

to allow for the protection of a bat colony (Greater Horseshoe Bat) during its breeding period, in accordance with Article L411-1 of the

Environmental Code, which prohibits the destruction or disturbance of protected species.

This site is a major ecological interest site at the regional level for this strictly protected species.

Real-time video surveillance allows monitoring the colony's evolution.

A virtual tour of the chapel's interior is available to explore this remarkable historical monument. Furthermore, you can also observe the interior through the small hatch integrated into the door.
