Hiking - MONTFURON - Geology, Man and the Earth

''The Mills of Montfuron'' is a beautiful hike that tells you along the way the geological history, the landscapes of the territory, and the relationships that unite humans and the Earth.

"From the village of Montfuron, proudly perched on its promontory, the route quickly leads into the forest, reaches the old gypsum mill, then returns via the Luberon ridges and the remarkable windmill dating from 1640, which still withstands time and the Mistral wind. The hike features several exceptional panoramic views and concludes with the discovery of the ancient Oppidum and a medieval stronghold. The Montfuron geosite perfectly illustrates the close and immemorial relationship between geology and human occupation." Stéphane Legal, geologist at the Luberon Regional Natural Park.

  • 400 m before point 2: La Joie ruins, private property, public access prohibited (risk of collapse!).

  • At point 2: the gypsum mill located on the other side of the road is in ruins and is on private property. It is strictly forbidden to approach the site (risk of falling stones).

  • Point 5: the ruins of the Montfuron Castle are strictly forbidden to the public (risk of falling stones).

  • Along the way, do not extract or collect fossils or minerals. The commune of Montfuron, rich in exceptional fossil sites, is within the perimeter of the Luberon Geological Nature Reserve, and the Luberon UNESCO Global Geopark.

  • CAUTION PASTORAL ZONE along the way. If encountered by protection dogs, do not pet or threaten them. Stop, then wait patiently for the "inspection" to finish before calmly resuming your path, skirting the flock as much as possible. Preferably, do not bring your dog, or keep it on a leash.
