Hiking - NANS-LES-PINS - L'escaillon and the Ice Road
A loop following in the footsteps of the former ice makers of Sainte-Baume!
Starting from the village, you quickly leave the houses behind to enter the forest. The ascent offers clear views of the Aurélien and Olympe Mountains, with the Sainte-Victoire range in the distance. On the descent, the trail overlooks the plain of Nans with regular viewpoints over the great rocky bar of Sainte-Baume mountain. Thus, you will hike one of the main routes used when the ice trade was booming between Marseille and Toulon.
In summer, the area is highly susceptible to fire risk. Therefore, access is regulated from June 21st to September 20th. Check the access conditions for forest areas, which are updated daily on the website of the Var Prefecture. There may be a herd and protection dogs along this hike: know the right reflexes! Bypass the herd as much as possible. If a dog approaches, stop, do not stare it in the eyes, do not brandish your poles, and speak to it calmly while waiting for it to identify you.
