Hiking - ORPIERRE - The Balcony Trails of Protestantism in 2 Days

Ideal for a weekend of soaking up local Protestant history and enjoying majestic viewpoints.

“This short 2-day trek crosses two villages with historical ties to the Protestant movement. Discovering these villages and their history helps you understand the importance of Protestants in the region. As for the scenery, the section along the ridges offers magnificent panoramic views of the various surrounding mountains, such as the Monges and Dévoluy massifs.” Léo Michelet, intern at the Baronnies Provençales Regional Natural Park.

The first stage follows the Route des Princes d’Orange, then the Grande Rue. The trail continues towards Suillet with a fairly steep, sun-exposed climb for over 1 km. The route then follows the ridge between Suillet and the Col de Garde. Once you reach the ‘Les Quatre Chemins’ crossroads, you can head to the summit of the Rocher de Garde for a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Then, to reach the Gîte d'étape du Mont-Garde, you will need to follow the marl ridge and cross a grazing area.
The second day is more difficult than the first. The start is flat until the village of Trescléoux, but the climb back up to the Col de Garde via the west face is quite tough, especially as you then have to climb further to reach Suillet. After that, it's all downhill on a path that crosses the Paradis district. Looking at the nearby rocks, you might see climbers in action. The stage ends by taking the switchback trail down to the village of Orpierre.

  • RESPECT THE TRANQUILLITY of the area you are walking in. Avoid shouting and do not use sound-producing devices (radios, etc.), out of respect for other users and for the peace of the local wildlife, especially during breeding and wintering periods when animals are much more vulnerable.

  • Avoid picking wild plants: some of them are protected species.

  • A section of the route is highly exposed to the sun, so be sure to bring the necessary gear (water, a hat, sunscreen, etc.) on hot summer days. It is best to set off early in the morning to avoid the hottest part of the day.

  • WARNING: PASTORAL AREA on the trail. If livestock guardian dogs approach you, do not pet or threaten them. Stop, and wait patiently for them to ‘check you out’ before calmly continuing on your way, giving the flock as wide a berth as possible. It is best not to bring your dog; if you do, keep it on a tight leash. Remember to close all gates behind you.

  • FIRE RISK. Fire is the enemy of the forest... and the hiker! Do not smoke in the forest and do not light any fires, as this is forbidden whatever the season! In summer, before setting out, check the access conditions and regulations for forest areas.
