Hiking - VIENS - Saint-Amas and the Fossil Footprint Slab
A quiet walk, but rich in varied landscapes. A first step towards understanding the relationship between humankind and the Earth...
“What I particularly appreciate about this route are the beautiful views towards the Gorges d'Oppedette and the Montagne de Lure, the dark undergrowth of Saint-Amas, but also the windows onto the colourful landscapes of the Gignac ochres, and then the extremely rare mammal footprints on the Viens slab. I also have to admit that wandering through the narrow streets of the hilltop village of Viens at the end is an epilogue with real character...” Patricia Jouberjan, cluster assistant at the Luberon Regional Nature Park.
- From point 1 to point 3: WARNING: PASTORAL ZONE along the way, especially around Saint-Amas. If livestock guardian dogs come towards me, I will not pet or threaten them. I will stop, then wait patiently for them to finish their "check" before calmly resuming my way, going around the flock as widely as possible. Preferably, I will not bring my dog; if I do, I will keep it on a leash. As a reminder, review the correct behaviour to adopt when encountering livestock guardian dogs.
- After point 5: I will enter the protected site of the Mammal Fossil Footprint Slab with respect. I will leave rocks, minerals and footprints in place, thereby preserving this geological heritage.
- FIRE RISK: Fire is the enemy of the forest… and the hiker! I will not smoke or light fires in the forest, especially since it is forbidden whatever the season! And in summer, before setting out on a walk, I will check the conditions and regulations for access to forest areas. Only the Sentier du Sahara, located in the heart of the Colorado area, is open to the public when the fire risk is 'very high' (closed when the risk is 'extreme').
